The Eades, Walthamstow

The Eades, Walthamstow

The Eades is a residential development in Walthamstow, East London, featuring an elevated communal terrace designed to give residents a high-quality outdoor amenity space in an urban setting. The brief called for a bespoke shading and shelter structure that would serve as a central focal point for the terrace whilst complementing the surrounding landscaping — a considered mix of raised planters, birch trees, and timber-slatted seating — and meeting the aesthetic expectations of a premium residential scheme.

The Solution

A bespoke steel pergola was designed and fabricated specifically for the terrace, featuring a bold louvred canopy and striking laser-cut side panels finished in a dark anthracite powder coat. The panels carry an intricate woodland branch pattern, a deliberate nod to the natural planting that surrounds the structure and a strong example of biophilic design principles applied to the built environment.
The pergola provides defined, sheltered space within the broader terrace, creating a destination within the landscape rather than simply an overhead structure. The laser-cut screening offers a degree of enclosure and privacy without closing the space in, allowing light to filter through whilst visually connecting the metalwork to the trees and planting beyond.

Key Features

The woodland motif on the laser-cut panels creates a seamless visual dialogue between the built structure and the living landscape. As the birch trees and surrounding planting mature, the relationship between the steel panels and the natural forms they reference will only strengthen, making the pergola an increasingly integral part of the terrace’s character.
The dark anthracite finish ties the pergola to the timber-slatted benches and raised steel planters used throughout the terrace, creating a cohesive palette across all the furniture and structures on site. The louvred canopy provides effective solar shading during warmer months, reducing the radiant heat load on the terrace below and keeping the space comfortable and usable for residents throughout the day.
As a fully bespoke piece, the pergola was designed to the specific dimensions and sightlines of the terrace, ensuring it anchors the space proportionally and enhances the overall landscape design rather than sitting apart from it.

Outcomes

The pergola has become the centrepiece of a thoughtfully designed communal terrace that balances shelter, greenery, and social space within a high-density urban residential setting. It demonstrates how bespoke fabrication can elevate an outdoor amenity space, delivering something that feels considered and site-specific rather than standard.
The combination of decorative steel screening, canopy shading, and integration with the surrounding planting reflects a growing recognition that residents in urban developments expect outdoor spaces of genuine quality — not simply a terrace with a bench, but a landscape worth spending time in.
