The Evolution of an Iconic Bench

From Bespoke Concept to Modular Masterpiece

Great design often starts with a challenge — a vision that pushes beyond standard solutions. The Arc modular seating range is a perfect example of how a bespoke project evolved into a flexible, sustainable, and architect-friendly modular system.

It all began with a client’s unique request. They had a concept for a striking, curved timber bench with horizontal bamboo slats — a bold idea, but one that proved impractical when translated into real-world construction. The design needed to stay true to its organic aesthetic, yet be structurally sound, cost-effective, and functional.

This led to the birth of the Arc, a seating system that perfectly balances creative design, practical engineering, and modular versatility.

Design Innovation

To maintain the curved form without excessive cost, we drew inspiration from previous cycle stand designs, using a modular steel frame system overlaid with pre-cut rounded timber slats. This allowed us to replicate the flowing design without large solid timber sections, reducing waste and improving efficiency.

We also addressed key practical challenges:
  • Access panels for easy maintenance and slat replacement.
  • Adjustable feet to handle level changes on-site.
The result? A sculptural yet practical bench system that balances form and function.

Flexibility: Designed for Any Public Space

What started as a one-off seating installation quickly proved to have far broader potential. By refining the design into a fully modular system, we ensured that Arc is as adaptable as it is striking.
  • Each unit can be used independently with end panels or connected to create continuous seating arrangements.
  • Available in various timber options (including Iroko, Thermowood, and Accoya) and a wide range of RAL colours for the steel framework.
  • The modular approach allows architects to create custom layouts tailored to specific spaces—from intimate curved benches around trees to expansive flowing configurations in public squares.
This means no two Arc installations need to look the same — every project can be site-specific, yet still benefit from the efficiency of a modular system.

Sustainability: Responsible Materials, Minimal Waste

Arc is designed with sustainability in mind, using FSC or PEFC-certified timber, ensuring responsible sourcing that supports forest conservation and ethical forestry practices.

The modular design also reduces waste by using standard-sized timber sections instead of large solid pieces. Arc is currently offered in Iroko, with options for Thermowood or Accoya, both known for durability and low environmental impact.

By prioritising sustainable materials and efficient manufacturing, Arc minimises its environmental footprint while enhancing public spaces.

Ease of Specification: Architect-Friendly Support

We make specifying Arc simple and efficient:
  • Modular system simplifies complex designs.
  • CAD models & CGI visuals available for seamless integration.
  • Material samples & technical drawings on request.
  • Collaboration from concept stage to meet project-specific needs.
